Current projects we are a part of.
Centers within the Larson Institute have planned, implemented, and evaluated a variety of trainings, webinar series, conferences, and events to address current and emerging public health needs. Key target areas have included: eliminating health disparities, sexual and gender minority health, rural health, opioid prevention, HIV prevention, effective use of behavioral health interventions, public health workforce development, and most recently, COVID-19 response.
Association of Accredited Public Health Programs (AAPHP)
Provide administrative direction and oversight to AAPHP including CEPH accreditation readiness and technical support, marketing of nationwide public health programs, hosting director town halls, and planning graduate recruitment fairs.
Black Youth Mental Health Project
Breast Cancer Needs Assessment for Minority and Underserved Populations
Collaborating with the Nevada Cancer Coalition to study barriers related to breast cancer screening for black women and women in underserved areas to improve knowledge, behaviors, and access to breast cancer screening.
Contact Tracing
Development and administration of a contact tracing program to support COVID-19 prevention and control efforts.
COVID Response
Provide supplemental public health training, communications, response and recovery efforts of COVID-19 in Northern Nevada.
Health in All Policies (HiAP) & Minority Health
Provide research, training, and capacity building to support the planning and implementation of Health in All Policies.
HIV Integrated Plan Development and Evaluation
Working with the Nevada Office of HIV, community-based organizations and providers, and other stakeholders in Nevada to develop the 2022-2026 Nevada HIV Integrated Prevention and Care Plan that will guide our state’s efforts to eliminate HIV.
Nevada Congenital Syphilis Review Board
Partnering with the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health to host and facilitate Congenital Syphilis Case Reviews and to develop recommendations and community action plans.
Nevada Faith-Based Initiatives
Provide leadership, outreach, and administration of the Faith-Based Coalition to address HIV and other health concerns.
Nevada Health Care Workforce & Pipeline Development Workgroup
Grow and diversify Nevada’s public health, behavioral health, and primary care workforces and workforce pipelines to ensure the state has a workforce capable of meeting current and future health care needs.
Overdose Data to Action (OD2A)
Provide overdose morbidity and mortality surveillance and supports linkages to treatment services.
Public Health Excellence
Provide public health accreditation readiness for state and local health departments, support academic health departments, develop workforce pipeline programs, support public health policy.
Workforce Development
Amplify the public health workforce through innovative research and skill-based education.
Hepatitis Elimination Plan
Provide research to support the development of a statewide hepatitis elimination plan. conduct needs assessment to support a statewide action plan.
HIV Needs Assessment
Provide statewide research and oversight to develop and implement a statewide HIV prevention needs assessment to contribute to the HIV community planning process.
Latinx Rural Vaccine Readiness
Provide research on vaccine hesitancy among Latinx populations in the quad county area to support vaccine readiness and vaccine communications efforts.
Professional Development in Health Equity
Develop and implement health equity professional development opportunities to statewide partners working in the fields of sexual and reproductive health.
Refugee Mental Health Project
Train culturally representative refugee peer resource navigators to offer trauma-informed mental health support to members of their community.
Rural Health and Safety Education
Mitigate long-term harm associated with the intersecting epidemics of opioid misuse and abuse and COVID-19 in rural counties.
Paraguay
A group of six students traveled to Paraguay, South America. Students provided needs assessments and public health education to two indigenous Ache communities. The students provided public health education on sanitation, hygiene, and the causes of parasitic diseases. Lessons were also given on family planning and over fifty women received ovulation tracking bracelets. ”

“In August 2019, eight SCHS students traveled to Kigali, Rwanda to continue a long-time partnership with the Niyo Cultural Centre. Students worked with the local community to educate about HIV, eye health, and sun protection with an albinism community. The Niyo Cultural Center has been a partner of the Nevada Public Health Training Center since 2015 and has provided countless students with service learning projects. ”

“School of Public Health faculty and students have traveled to Peru for a partnership with the Nevada Building Hope Foundation to implement and evaluate a CPR and first aid training program to two Amazon river communities. In addition to needs assessments, CPR and first aid, visitors also taught personal hygiene and how to make soap in one of the communities.”
